whoooaa...Really Emily????
Yes, really...
You might not think it's that controversial, but some people do.
Which i understand, because i used to be one of them.
I always told myself i wouldn't hit up online dating till i was at least 28 and still single.
And now we're in the whole "Catfish" era.
Where people are being tricked online.
Which makes it even harder to have people understand it if
you are successful with online dating.
Well obviously most of you know that's how i met Tom.
No no, Tom didn't catfish me...
We weren't initially talking because we wanted to date.
We were talking because we were interested in being Pen-Pals.
Sounds silly i know...
It just turned into a something more than that.
Which is the best thing EVER!!
I mean honestly a year ago i would have laughed in your face if
you told me i was going to be in a Long Distance Online relationship with someone.
Especially someone from England.
Especially a cutie like Tom.
But here i am, 6 months strong and happy as can be with my british guy.
There are of course pros and cons to any dating experience.
Obviously not being able to be close to each other is the major con!
{But let me shed some positive light on online dating}
It's been so great to me, that i feel it deserves some kind words.
I've gotten to know Tom SO WELL just by talking to him.
We can talk for hours and hours about anything.
Silly, serious, sweet, awkward...we can talk about it.
That's one of my favorite things about this experience.
All we can do is talk to each other.
That's it!
We don't get to kiss, or cuddle, we get to talk.
As important as a physical connection is, talking is where it's at.
If you're not comfortable talking with someone for hours and hours,
then it's probably not going to work out very well.
Tom and I have talked for what i feel is thousands of wonderful hours.
And all i want is to keep talking to him...
I feel thats a good sign.
So would i trade my online dating experience for a relationship that's here and now?
Honestly, no!
Obviously I'll be ready when Tom get's here and we're able to spend more time together.
But would i change the way we met???? No way!!!
That might have something to do with the fact that i found
an amazing guy who thinks i'm cute when i snort laugh.
What can I say, we're perfect for each other ;)
There's always going to be people who don't get it.
There's always going to be people who think it's silly and judge it.
But, as long as you're happy, and know it's right for you,
then you don't need to worry about those people.
Because one day they will see that it is right for you.
Tom will be here next month!!
NEXT MONTH.
JUNE 19TH
:) :) :) :) :)
{Here's some things i'm most excited about}
Meeting him in the airport.
Having a real picture with him.
Having him meet the family for real not just over Skype.
Going on a trip {Hint}
There's just SO MANY exciting things!!!
I can't wait!!!
And who know's maybe one day we will make millions
being the spokespeople for eharmony or something like that ;)
But can i just be honest for a second?
My plea to everyone is this.
Don't judge what you don't understand.
What's right for you may not be right for someone else.
Be happy for people who are happy.
And share in the joy.
-Emily
I snort-laughed out loud when I read what you wrote about snort-laughing. My BF also thinks it's cute when I snort-laugh...it must be a UK thing (he's from London) :) In all seriousness though, meeting someone special- on line or in real life- is awesome... especially when they say blimey on occasion! Good luck to you guys
ReplyDeletehaha that's amazing!!! Aww we both snort laugh and have British boys!!! :-D Thanks so much for the encouraging words. I love when Tom says rubbish or just anything really British haha ;) Good luck to you guys as well!!!

ReplyDeleteThank you so much, to be honest this is a post i've been thinking about writing for a while. There's probably more to follow ;) I've had people in favor of it and people who have looked down on it so i've seen both sides, but at the end of the day if it works it works ;)
DeleteI only just heard about the catfish thing due to that Glee episode. I really think its awesome the way you guys met and are dating because it will only make the future of your relationship that much stronger. I did a summer in Australia with one of the campaigns after I started dating Ryan and so I was 'that girl' who was calling, emailing, and writing all the time to her Uni boyfriend back home. However we then got engaged the next semester, so I guess it all worked out. :)
ReplyDeleteBonnie Rose | A Compass Rose
Exactly Bonnie, that's what both of us tell each other all the time, all of this "talking" is going to be so beneficial to our relationship :) Aww you did the same thing for a while and it worked out. That's awesome. Thanks Bon, you're always so encouraging!! :)
DeleteI have to agree with you, I actually met my now Fiance online. We weren't even on a "dating" site. It was a Toronto based website, where people could make profiles, find friends whatever.. I had the account on the website because I'd use it when I was bored in class.. He messaged me, at first I was pretty rude to him, because I wasn't interested in "finding someone online" but then things started to happen, and after about 3 months we started to hang out as friends... Four years later, here we are planning our wedding haha.. I really like the photo/quote you posted.. Its really true.. I know I don't know you or anything, but I'm really excited for you to meet Tom haha ( My fiance's name is Tom too! lol )
ReplyDeleteAww you basically started out the same way we are :) That's amazing. I'm really excited to see where this goes with Tom. And you have a Tom too haha Tom's are pretty great ;) Hey i'd love for you to be excited for me, I'm excited for you too, have a blast with wedding planning!! And consider us friends now!!! ;)

Oh very cool!!! :-) It's exciting to meet people in this way! :)
DeleteEmily,
ReplyDeleteThis was such an encouraging post. I have been throwing around the idea of online dating and this gave me some more encouragement to try it!
Thanks for sharing!
I'm so glad you liked it :) you know sometimes that "person" isn't right in front of you and you have to do a little searching for them. I wish you the best luck with online dating if thats the way you decide to go :)
DeleteGreat post - as long as you are happy, that's what matters. Who cares how you met someone anyway?
ReplyDeleteYes, Yes and YES!! haha thanks so much for the encouraging words!! :)
DeleteI really, really like your story. It is so unique to you in such a stereotypical dating society. I dated long distance as well, so I definitely relate to you especially while in college. I wanted to ask though where or how you became pen pals because that sounds so fun!
ReplyDelete-Brittany
Thank you so much Brittany, it's so encouraging to hear that so many people think it's neat :) Well the site i met tom was called interpals{dot}com. Honestly it's not the best site in the world but i got lucky ;) It is a great way to meet people from all over the world though :)
DeleteI'm so excited for you to meet him in person. I know that when Sam and I are doing long distance (US-UK) whenever I get to finally see him its like a weights has been lifted off my chest. Very happy for you! xx
ReplyDeleteMeeee to haha :) Yea i feel like that will be how it goes down, we're just both so ready to spend some time together :) Glad to know it's working out for you girly! :)
DeleteGlad you had the courage to write this :) as someone who's been in the same place as you are I can totally relate :) my love story ended up taking place in real life but I know it can stink when it feels like everyone has an opinion. Love ya!
ReplyDeleteAww thanks AL, this post has been a long time coming haha Love you too!!!
Deletemy heart is beating for this entry. I love it, i want to cry. love comes unexpectedly and Tom seems such a great guy.
ReplyDeletei didn't meet my husband online but he is British and there was a time in our lives when we apart and we had to chat online and make long hours phone calls.
You are just the sweetest!! thanks for the kind words!! :)
DeleteI second...third...however many-th agree with the lovely ladies above. You seem so so so happy and that's all one can ask for! Plus, look at him. How can anyone judge? Like I've said in a few comments before, sign me up for that. (Tom - if you're reading...I have always wanted a British boyfriend and you must have one single friend, right?!) :)
ReplyDeleteSO excited to see the photos of his trip! I die every time I see a blog post from you that gives another hint!
Ohhh girl, you are amazing!! :) Thank you so much!! hahaha I'll get Tom on it right away, we'll set you up!! ;)
Deleteeeep, i'm excited for our trip too, i can't wait to share ALL of it with everyone!! :)
I met my husband on-line :) :)
ReplyDeleteI met my long term boyfriend on Lovestruck, think we broke the terms and conditions seeing as neither of us were from London but were using the London site as it was where most people were at. Imagine the chances of meeting somebody, falling for them and thinking you'd have to hike to London to see them then realising that you both live within 50 miles of each other, 200 miles away from London! :D
ReplyDeleteIf that's not a sign, I don't know what is!
HI Emily,
ReplyDeleteYou have shared great thoughts. Christian singles dating
Yes I am completely agree with the post here. Like your thoughts.
ReplyDeleteI just recently started trying to find friends online and hopefully begin dating! I was so nervous until I read your blog, I feel a lot better now, great article!
ReplyDeleteAw, I'm so glad that you met Tom and that you have gotten to spend time with him in person finally!
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, online dating is great for any age and not something you just "resort" to (as you've found out). Sure, your significant other living across the pond isn't as convenient as someone living local -- but if you connect, you connect. :)
Can I plug a new dating site that I feel strongly about? The site is called Dialogue Dating. I see you mentioned being wary of the whole "Catfish" thing, well Dialogue Dating will have various verification methods to help prevent catfishing and other forms of misrepresentation. It's still in the early stages, but anyone can sign up now for free at DialogueDating.com
I wish all the best to you and Tom.
